Sorry to ask such basic questions, but I can't get the video to play through our firewall... Do they explicitly show an external WiFi card plugged into the slot?

Yes...he holds it up and then sticks it into the slot.

I have been told a number of times that in reality wages do not make any significant different to actual product cost.

    It's simple to understand really.

If you have 1 guy who is standing, running a high tech machine that's turning out say 100 items per hour and those items are worth $20 each.

So that's $2000 per hour this unit (man and machine) are creating.

If you pay the guy $1 for this hour, or $20 for this hour. Yes, one it being paid 20 times as much as the other. But in reality, this cost it very little when put against the value of the items that are being created during this time period.

Alright we have quite a few postings that are merely mindless rage being evoked out of 2 word sentences. Here are my thoughts about this whole situation without starting a sentence with "F" and ending it with "!!!!!".....

-I think people will still want to have that physical DVD before abandoning it for digital files for some time. I now that it took me about a year and a half before I stopped buying CD's since the launch of the Music Store. Granted that was fueled mostly by the albums not being on iTunes, but now that is hardly the case.

-Are or are not the quality of the iTunes movies subpar compared to the actual DVD's? This I have not heard an actual fact based answer about yet.

-Ready to crucify me? You will after this statement. Wal-Mart is a major reason that this country has not seen a full blown inflation over the course of the last 10 years. Yes, the cost of some things has risen, but when you look across the board the actual rise has not been as bad as in the past. Wal-Mart's aggressive style of pricing, while hurting manufacturers in some cases, has helped keep prices in check with other stores. Think about it, why would you go over to the chain grocery store to buy a 2 liter of Pepsi for $1.50 when you can get it for $1.00 at Wal-Mart? I have seen more and more sales at grocery stores that are matching Wal-Mart's everyday prices. That is good for my household.

Yes I know that Wal-Mart's use of labor is not the model of wholesome remotely, but the people that work at Wal-Mart are not necessarily the ones that would be lawyers, doctors or managers anyways. Society needs people to do jobs that everyone doesn't want to do. Does someone grow up saying that they WANT to be a janitor at McDonalds? Using that philosophy, does anyone grow up wanting to be that cashier at Wal-Mart? Probably not, but someone has to do it. And unfortunately, there are a lot of bad or not so nice things that come with those jobs. I personally would love to be a Wal-Mart greeter in Florida when I retire.

-I don't buy Music or Movies at Wal-Mart because of their censorship program that they have had in place for many years. I don't know if they still have it, but I remember that Wal-Mart actually made of the CD vendors make a "clean" version of the latest album because they did not want to sell it with explicit lyrics on it a few years back. No no no no.... I have enough people out there from senators to mothers groups making it harder for me to get the unedited music, movies and video games in life that I want. I don't need the store making that choice for me also.

I don't think Wal-Mart would actually pull a stunt like this with Hollywood and Apple, but if they did start throwing punches I would be very happy to go over to the competition over at Super Target. But that would then start another argument about Target's employee practices.... ;)

I really like this one. I love the use of b&w with its high contrast. My eye starts on the front left pillar, then is pulled to the right column along the shaft of light on the ground to the bright side of the right column, then the contrast pulls me to the dark side, which then pulls to the bright side of the back left pillar and eventually leads to the perfectly lit Washington Monument. Where were you standing? Lincoln Memorial? This is of course assuming that I am correct in guessing thats DC and not some other monument somewhere in the world.

Thank you for the kind words. I love hearing what elements in a picture peoples eyes are drawn too and how they visually work around the image. That picture was taken from the Jefferson Memorial and the obelisk pictured is indeed the Washington Monument.

Here's another angle on it, I'm not sure how I feel about this one though. I would've liked to be in the middle of the street so the monument would be more visible in the gap right above the flag, but even so, the framing of the buildings directly on the right and left of the monument may have been too tight. Thoughts?

    a) apple did the exact same thing with OS X. aqua was kept under wraps for a long, long time from the general public and public developers. up until maybe a year before hand we all though OS X was going to look like OS 9.

    b) if you work with big software makers you'll know that top tier developers get access to things that aren't made publicly available months and years in advance. the last alpha/beta cycle i participated in started one month after the latest release (and i was on the second invite list).

    a) see above regarding developers. just because we didn't see it in the keynote doesn't mean that the developers haven't

    b) app developers don't really integrate with the finder.

    c) tiger represented a big shift in OS X development. apple publicly stated that their APIs, previously a moving target, were basically being locked down. what that means is developers don't have to worry (as much) about under the hood changes. if the file browser dialog changes dramatically between now and next spring developers should theoretically have to do nothing, their function/method calls are just calls.
You hit a lot of points here that I chose not to present. You are correct.
    a) The OS X preview UI was definitely a surprise, that's for sure.
    b) Very true.
    a) True, but I think this only applies to the "top tier" developers, as you suggest. (Adobe, for example)
    b) Exactly! Other than visually... (Which it's easy to skin your app to match (see Uno))
    c) If this is true (which I could understand, but have no evidence of) are you suggesting Apple laid the groundwork for a UI overhaul in Tiger and didn't apply it?

Honestly, most musicians don't study the Beatles as individuals - nor do they need to - because they were just solid musicians, nothing spectacular. When you had Clapton, Beck, and even Townshend, there is no need to study Lennon or Harrison. When you had Entwistle ... no need for McCartney.
Even though Clapton, Beck, Townshend, and Entwistle left some pretty big footsteps, every one of them would admit they themselves followed in some pretty big footsteps as well.

And, from a slightly different angle, Les Paul as well as the Beatles/EMI made huge strides in recording techniques that are still the foundations today for what is now commonly done in Pro Tools. Whether or not you like Les Paul or the Beatles, that's still true.

Pioneers are still the pioneers; the greats always stand on the shoulders of the greats that came before them, it's how it works. All are made up from parts of the work of those who came before. The "greatest rock and roll band in the world" never becomes that without Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry; but you don't even have to be a fan of those guys to like what the Stones built from those influences. Or what will be made from musicians who have the Stones as one of their influences.

... and that putting aside the fact that in the mid 60's the level of musicianship exhibited by even average jazz players was far above anything rock players seen as 'innovators' were doing ...
It's an unfortunate fact that their level of musicianship and talent may have no bearing on their success or their the ability to influence modern music. The world is full of technically proficient musicians playing music nobody wants to listen to. Sad, yes, but there it is.

I wonder if that aluminium beveled logo has something to do with the design of the long awaited new MacBook Pros?...

...it's already featuring on the iPhone...

Would Apple make a notebook computer with an :apple: logo that doesn't glow?

Google for "thread 500" and click the top match--always hilarious :)

If the new nanos played games and videos (I know--really small) I'd HAVE to buy one. So I'm glad they don't :)

The case combines the best of the Mini and Nano--all good.

I was talking about a new one not a refurbished one. I want to buy the core duo macbook after the c2d ones are released because i do not need the uprgrades and i could get a good deal. The core duo macbook pros dropped $300 so i was wondering how much the macbooks would drop.

I was talking about the new ones aswell  the refurb shop also sells stock they want to get rid of and that includes old macbooks.

My take on this is that in order for the iPOD Classic to survive, it needs the larger HDs now available, IOS & a touch screen. Then it would be essentially a tiny iPAD + a large capacity iPOD and I think some people not wanting to carry around such a large device as the iPAD might like that.

Otherwise, if sales are sluggish, they'll have no choice but to euthanize it. Pity, because it's still the only Apple device that many people can fit their ENTIRE music collection on. My iPhone certainly doesn't and doesn't for many people.

Rubbish. There is a Jupiter sized gap in Apples product "matrix". They have no desktop for frig sake!
Where else would you sit your iMac?

Well, lets see where would they put it? Between Mac Mini and iMac.... you know in that $200 difference. Or maybe between iMac and Pro Mac.... in that what $300 difference. It seems like the Mac Mini bump and iMac expansion have left no room in the line-up for another Mac. Even with conroes... all speeds, sizes, prices are covered. There isn't room for a Conroe Mac. Period.

The iMac isn't a headless mac, so it's not even in the equation. It would go in between the mini and Pro, and fall in the same price range as the iMacs. It's a different product category, might as well say they shouldn't have the iMac since there are already laptops in that price range.

It makes no sense for apple to ignore Conroe, it's intel's best bang for buck right now.

At this point I'm thinking that most updates of current machines will happen before tuesday, maybe the Showtime thing will be when they finally announce a midtower (probably pizza box form factor). Works as a settop box, or any mac can stream to the new Airport video.

    And those waiting for MBPs........Start Crying :D :D :D

Nonsense. I still think there's a good chance we see them before tuesday, if not, definitely in the next two weeks.

Do you know what a computer without drivers is? A paperweight. The OS is not a single monolithic thing; it's made up of many components. The notion of what is "written into the OS" is more complicated than you seem to think, and it's childish to dismiss a vulnerability because it's in a driver.

Well... but at least it's not Apple's fault, because they didn't produce the driver. Therefore it's actually not a concern of Apple's but of the driver's producer's.

On the other hand Apple did include it into it's OS seemingly without testing it thorougly, and that is, of course, a concern of Apple's. So they will have to work together to get rid of that - and I'm sure they will - and I may be smug again. :p

After reading this article (http://gizmodo.com/343246/what-to-expect-at-macworld-2008-and-why-we-think-it-will-bigger-than-usual) I think that it's entirely possible that Apple are altering their branding. Also the lack of an Apple logo could be explained by the fact that everyone at the expo would recognise it as them anyway and it adds to the air of secrecy and mystery that they love to use in their marketing.

oh yes, absolutely no sign of an Apple logo here....

Sad part is, as adoption increases...so will viruses/malware/trojans/etc.

    Best analogy Ive heard is:

Windows 7 is a house with bars on the windows, and industrial locks on the doors...in Baltimore.

OSX is a house with no locks, in the middle of nowhere.

You haven't been to Baltimore lately!
Middle of Nowhere is just south of the interstate and is beautiful.

News flash, Macs are popular and plentiful and still have no Viruses.
Don't you worry about the future. It will get here and it will be fine.

Windows users, be afraid, be very afraid.
