Huh! Could be interesting so long as only Apple's devices are the hosts and not other devices like Android etc. That would follow the model they are using with AirPlay for audio, so it might make sense.
If that happens though and it is baked into TVs then it almost negates the reason to get an Apple TV box. Maybe this is when Apple would introduce a full on TV set with everything integrated! :D

It's still on, no matter what you try to spin it as. A review is a review. This is the same as when an appeals court decides to hear a case, they haven't overturned anything until they've overturned something. But they can't overturn something without first REVIEWing it. ;)

Another example I've read (subway farecard) would tell people that I'm subway rider 25879346 or something. I've also read about using it as a credit card, which would require a PIN number to use. Anyone can currently snap a photo of you handing a card to a cashier, so it's no different from that.
None of these are shouting out anything about who I am. If you're critisizing something else, you'll have to actually tell me what you're talking about since it hasn't been mentioned here yet.

I'm a heavy Chronosync user but I carry my MacBook back and forth and synchronize them on the same LAN (at home in my case). Synchronizing them at different locations requires getting through routers and firewalls and needs something like VPN or Yazsoft's Sharetool. Synchronization is an action you must remember to perform before switching from one system to the other.
If Dropbox works for you then it is a much slicker approach. You can use shortcuts (also known as aliases or soft links) to make it appear that various folders in your Dropbox are located at various spots on your drive. Downside to Dropbox is it can cost money if you can't keep below the free limit, and apparently there are security issues with the service since they store your files on their site.

I'm guessing you still needed to use a "slipstreamed" XP SP2 CD with the SATA drivers installed so it doesn't run in dog slow PIO mode

You still need a driver CD from Apple for all that...you can get that from someone that installed Bootcamp....

I miss the days when I could order an 8 pack of eMacs for our school for $4995. That comes out to less than $625 each. Now the cheapest computer I can get from Apple is $899 for the 20" iMac, (maybe $825 if I buy 25 or so and sweet talk my account rep). That's like a $5000-7000 difference for a lab of 25. Not small peanuts by any means when it comes to school budgets.
This $20 discount is a kick in the nuts from Apple. They'll still charge us 29 bucks for each stupid dongle and make that right back. (cue Clark Griswold rant)

I'm trying to install Panther on our G3 iMac DV from the back up disks that came with our new G5 iMac. (G3 iMac DV: 10.2.8; 768MB; 80GB)
Among the bundled software is Nanosaur 2.0 (pretty fun). It is not supported on the G3.
The install options are:
1. Panther + bundled applications
2. Bundled applications only
3. OS 9 only
There is no Panther-only install option that I can determine.
When I attempt to install on the G3, the installer determines that the target machine does not support the bundled software (as noted above) and stops.
I've inspected the directories of all the back up disks and have not found anything useful.
Does anyone know a work-around to this issue? Or if I want Panther on the old machine, will I have to purchase a Panther upgrade?
One final question: Will my proof of purchase coupons entitle me to a copy of Panther or Tiger that I could install on the G3 iMac?

This is definitely good news. I had friends in corporate I.T. where they did a massive migration from Notes to Exchange/Outlook (mostly due to Microsoft salespeople's slick talking and giving strategic gifts to the right people) -- and the environment suffered.
Notes has its bugs and issues, but it also has some flexibility that Exchange/Outlook doesn't offer.
Lotus Notes is a great program when it's implemented correctly. We've been using it over 10 years now and there's still nothing out there that can touch it.
Improved support on the Apple is a good thing. They are even improving the client on Linux as well. That will really give people the potential to move away from windows.

You don't need to know a year ahead of Apple's product launch dates to run your business. There are lots of professionals using 5 year old software to get their millions of dollars of worth work done. I like software upgrades as much as the next guy, but just because it's cool to install new stuff, not that I'll be able to do much more than I can do right now with the new software.

That's one of the reasons The Foundry (developer of Nuke, Mari, Storm) are so respected in the industry - they listen to what the customers want, go and visit them, and disclose the roadmap a year or so in advance, saying what will be in the next versions and pretty much exactly when they'll be released.
A lot of the new 3D stuff can't be done easily in FCP because it doesn't support stereoscopic playback (there are some plugins which help, but they're not that great), so it's rapidly showing its age. Same goes for RED file support.
3D stereoscopic playback is one of the reasons Shake is now showing its limits compared to Nuke. It's still very usable for the basics, but for new stuff, it's falling behind.

Ok, here you go, my list of "Must Have" free apps:
TigerLaunch: This puts a little paw print near the clock at teh top of your screen and allows you to access all of your apps through it. Its quick, easy and very cool. Oh, and its customizable.
Desktop Manager: By far the most useful free app I have ever seen. This little gem allows you to run multiple desktops on OS X. It is great, free, and has very few bugs. It is cool beyond belief.
Konfabulator: The closest thing to Tiger's Dashboard feature. This widget launcher is free, cool and very well done. Great for webcams, weather alerts, stock quotes etc.
Tinker Tool, Onyx, System Optimizer and Cocktail all unlock hidden OS X features.
Teal and Gimp: A very poor man's photoshop.
Anyway, thats all. Let me know what you think of my list.

Has anyone with the new iMac experienced the persistent buzzing issue present in most of the models last year?
The issue presents itself when the brightness is below full (and proceeds to get louder as you lower the brightness further). Tends to be more obvious when the casing becomes warm.
This is the only thing keeping me from buying an iMac, after the few I got last year were all returned for that issue.

Hmm.. I think Apple is keeping a tight lip on the iPhone 5. It's probably the most top secret objective atm, due to last year's iPhone 4 leak.
If anything Apple could have released the iPad 2 in September, because they're still on top of the tablet market, but smartphone wise they're lacking big time. Apple instead needs to step up their A game in the smartphone market and not releasing an iPhone 5 this year will be plain stupidity.
I'm not believing any of this until WWDC, i remember seeing enough articles saying that the iPad 2 will be released in Fall as well.
Btw guys, even if they are pushing the release date back to Fall, i highly doubt it's because of the Verizon iPhone, i think Apple knows how few people bought those. I'm sure Apple is more concerned with AT&T, and the whole world, instead of the small iPhone population in Verizon.

Same thought. Why cant people just (I know this sounds crazy) listen to CR when they make factually based reviews (i.e., iPhone 4 antenna design CAN lead to dropped calls). I hate this blind bias some folks have on here.
I think some folks here have a legitimate gripe with CR. Of course there are plenty who don't even bother to think it through, hating them simply because they attacked an Apple product, but on that note they gave heavy weight to the antenna issue, did not do similar testing on other similar products (including those which clearly had similar issues), and continued to highlight the issue. It looks very much like a publicity grab.
I'm not losing a moment of sleep over it, and I actually do use CR from time to time (though sometimes they've recommended trash to me), but it isn't right to give them a night of sweet loving just because they highlighted the iPad when it doesn't yet have real competition.
Last year Macrumors posters told me in no uncertain terms that CR is always wrong.

The current system of showing apps as the same, no matter if they are in a sleep state or in a active state, and letting the user guess which is which is a failure.
Seriously, go look at WebOS and then come back and tell me the iOS presentation is anything other that a generation or more behind the state-of-the-art.
They're getting rid of the light in lion. They don't want the average user worrying about "open" or "closed" apps. Just use and exit when done. The system will worry with open and closed. I like it that way.

This. You want a simple random sample, a sample size greater than 30, and a population size greater than ten times your sample size.
As a statistician, it always simultaneously amuses and disappoints me when people say "xxx isn't a large enough sample size!"
Usually the sample size is completely adequate, and it's only that the sampling technique was flawed. It's extremely difficult to get an unbiased sample when doing a survey.

A MacBook trackpad does NOT need a click to register.
You can change the settings so that you do not need to click at all, it simply takes your touch as a click. I use it in this way all the time, I NEVER click the touchpad.

The trackpad can be setup in System Preferences to respond to a touch as a click rather than a physical click. That is the way I have used it from days one and I have no issues with it at all.

It's on their site but in another colour, they do the same case with wood instead of carbon fibre, the leather case designed to work with the smart cover looks pretty good IMO

I wonder if this increase is an accurate reflection of the market. PC sales always tend to drop off hugely in the run up to a new windows release.

Apple's 5.8% marketshare would be far higher if it wasn't for the corporate bulk-buying of PCs for business; plus all the end of line, bargain-basement PCs that may figure in any such report.

Hello. I'm not sure if I'm in the right forum, but I'll post anyway.. ;)
When I read a CD, I hear "tick tick tick tick..." instead of the song. Same thing when I import the songs and read them. It also does the same thing when I read the imported songs from my desktop pc in my Laptop (both PCs btw, im too poor to switch yet. maybe next year). But I can read and import the songs from the CD when I'm on my laptop. Also, I can listen to the songs allright if I import them from my laptopn then send it on my desktop PC.
Any clue? please help me!
(ps : my laptop has 4.6 and my desktop pc has 4.7... And yes i tried to re-install!)

on the left side, is the only place that Xeon was listed. There are 5 processors listed there, however on the top where the tabs are, there are only 4, there is no xeon

In the end, I think we can all agree that Woodcrest Xeons, Conroes, and Meroms all share a common basic architecture (the core architecture) and that the Macpro was the first machine Apple shipped with the new architecture (with the iMac following).

Hey, I'll just say if the next iPhone is fast enough it can play games far smoother than mine (or even gets games my 4 cannot play), I'll be fully jealous and say that yeah, it is a decent upgrade for that alone.
But it just depends on how much faster it is and how incompatible it makes my 4 for new games (if they just aim their games at the next iphone gen owners).

Here in the UK the amount of tax is based upon the CO2 emissions from a car, so larger engines generally incur a higher penalty. However, if you are insistent on buying a large expensive 4x4 for example, I don't think the amount of tax is really going to put you off.
I pay �125 per year for a 2.0 litre TDI
Vehicle Excise Duty should be put on fuel, not based on the car; it's not the car you drive, it's the amount of fuel used - a driver using 2 gallons in a small car versus another using 1 gallon in a large car.
As mentioned, if they can tax it then they will - electricity, hydrogen ...
